Flesh
by
David Szalay
Teenage István’s relationship with an older woman leads to tragedy and trauma. We follow his life through intimate moments, with lovers, employers, and family members, charted over the course of decades. The story hurtles forward, brightened by moments of sensitivity and softness until sudden tragedy again throws István’s life into jeopardy.
The Booker Prize judges “had never read anything quite like it”, said panel chair Roddy Doyle who went on to say, “It is, in many ways, a dark book, but it is a joy to read.”
Born in Montreal to a Hungarian father and Canadian mother, Szalay grew up in London. He has lived in Lebanon and the UK, and now lives in Vienna. After graduating from Oxford, he worked as a financial advertising sales executive. Flesh is his sixth novel.
