Dear Students and Teachers
Welcome to the Library’s “Texts for communication and oral language teaching and learning“ libguide! We are delighted to share this resource in the context of the Primary Language Curriculum which has a strengthened focus on the development of communication and oral language for all. Language learning occurs in the context of social interaction and language teaching is underpinned by a social-interactionist perspectives on language acquisition and language development. The shared enjoyment of high quality books provides rich opportunities for adult-child dialogue and for the use of teacher talk strategies to facilitate language teaching and learning (see McGough in Reach (2016) Vol.29, issue 2, p.102-115)
In this guide you will find a selection of titles which could be used to support communication and language work with upper primary pupils and post-primary students with learning difficulties or special educational needs. These will provide natural, engaging and stimulating contexts for teachers to use strategies such as repeating, recasting, expanding, modelling, cueing and responding to support language development across the age range and with learners with diverse and complex needs. Many of the titles listed will provide rich exposure to the kinds of decontextualized, academic language and rich vocabulary which is necessary for children and young people to acquire. You will find some titles which will be particularly suitable for stimulating teacher-pupil discourse to support the development of the kinds of more complex language use to for example, justify an opinion, evaluate, speculate and present an argument required.
Please cross-check the availability of a title in Library Search.
We hope that you will find this collection helpful.
