Literature Reviews: Keeping up to date

Types of alerts

Many databases have features which help keep you up to date easily by saving searches and creating alerts. This is particularly useful when conducting research over a period of time.

You will have to create an account on the relevant database.

The most common types of alerts include:

  • Search alerts - receive notifications when new items are added to the database that match your search terms
  • Author alerts - receive notifications when new items are added by a specified author
  • Journal alerts - receive notifications when a new issue of a journal becomes available
  • Citation alerts - receive notifications when a specified item is cited by a newly added item.
